See and Be Scene - October 17th

Ok - this Saturday is EPIC (see the caps? that means I'm yelling). Unfortunately, with an epic Saturday night ahead - there are also tough decisions to be made.

3 must see events tonight - but alas, only so many hours in the night. Let's not waste time and get straight to the decision making process. Tonight:

Notorious Funk at the Scoot Inn (1308 E. 4th Street). Two of my favorite DJ's (Orion vs Prince Klassen) are facing off and spinning two of my favorite artists (Biggie vs. James Brown). The party is going from 9 - 2 a.m. and if you RSVP here you can get in for $3. Even if you don't RSVP, the cover is only $5 at the door.
Custom clothing will be made at Scoot inn by Tripp T-Shirts and be sure to get your picture snapped by the roaming photogs capturing the fun. All of this is presented by Knuckle Rumbler and Do512.com.

Crazy costume Romanian dancing party more your style? Check out the Gadjo Disko tonight at the Cockpit (113 San Jacinto). We went to the last Gadjo Disko back in August and this one looks just as promising. Imagine the most extreme, weird and bizarre outfit that you could possibly wear...now dress stranger. You'll fit right in. Plus, if you dress up the cover is only $7, as opposed to "normal" people have to pay $15 to get in. Expect great music from Stanley Roy, Little Stolen Moments, Minor Mishap Marching Band, DJ Chicken Kiev & Sick! Party goes all night from 10 - 4 a.m. Opa!

One last event that is on our must-attend list is Electri-CITY (ArcAttack). This is going down in Kenny Dorham's backyard at 1106 E. 11th St. There will be two 12' tall singing Tesla Coils brought to you by ArcAttack. They are described as "an eye popping spectacle of musical midi-controlled electricity that you must hear and see to believe". Advance tickets are $5 here.
The event starts at 8:30 and the bands start at 9. Bands inlcude Panjoma (an eclectic electronic blend of pop and rock), Gobi, DubNautica and special guest DJ John Thomas. Beer and liquor services provided by Side Bar and multi-screen video projection will be provided by HipNautica.
Sponsors for the event include: Navdo, Puzzelle Productions, Diverse Arts Austin, Zebra Imaging, ATX Underground.

Whatever you decide, be sure to check out at least one of the above (or if you're an amazing multi-tasker, all three). See you out!

xoxo

See and Be Scene - October 16th

This weekend is going to be AMAZING! Here are some hand-picked events for your Friday pleasure.

Beard Folks at Austin Handmade (located on 2009 S. 1st St.) is guaranteed to be fun. Why, you ask? There will be an interactive bearded photo booth provided by local artist Corinne Loperfido! What more do you want? I last saw Corinne's amazing beard-art skills when her and Kevin C. Foote teamed up and did a show at the Birdhouse Gallery back in August.
The show on Friday is guaranteed to be just as good (if not better). As is usually the case with this blog, we believe fun can be had for cheap. Beard Folks is no exception - free alchohol will be provided by St. Arnolds Brewery and Treaty Oak Rum, free "beard cakes" by Sugar Mama's Bakeshop and great music by Team Fabrication.
The show starts at 6:30 and goes til 9:30, but get there early - free mustache giveaways to the first 25 guests! If you can't make it at 6:30, don't fret - there will be other giveaways and raffles provided by Birds Barbershop. See you there!!

If that's not enough art for you - here's something else (but not for the children):

The $ex & Death art show at the 5th Gallery. 5th Gallery is located at 305 B. E. 5TH. This is an "adult themed" event. The Facebook page describes the group show this way: "features how artists percieve, react & respond to sex, death & variations of the two. This show will explore themes considered "taboo". The show starts at 7:00 and ends at 11:00. The show is actually running through November 13th - tonight is the opening party and there is a closing party on November 13th (Friday the 13th!) also from 7-11 pm.
We'll probably check this out for a few minutes after the Beard Folks.

After all the art - it's time for some good old downtown clubbing action. First stop:

My favorite nightlife spot in Austin (besides 4th St.) is having a arty-party tonight! Be at Beauty Bar at 9pm for the Austin Brooklyn Art Exchange. And once again early bird gets the worm, as the first 50 in get a free CD! Beauty Bar is at 617 E. 7th, and has hosted many a great events in the past. Tonight, hear music by Deadbeat Darling, The White White Lights and Spencer Gibb. Be sure to check out the (live) screen printing by Twin Villain and the market by GAT5 textiles. Also, Car Stero Wars are inside...I've heard them before, and they don't dissapoint. Admittedly, I'm not sure what the cover is for this event - but it's usually not too high at Beauty Bar.
If it gets too crowded there, we'll probably hop over to Creekside where our DJ buddy Orion is playing. If you haven't seen him DJ, not to be missed. Wear your dancing shoes! Oh, and have I mentioned - Orion always has the coolest flyers? ----->

There are some other things going on tonight that we probably won't be going to, but they are worth a mention:

So...that's your Friday! There's even more stuff going on tomorrow, and stay tuned for an update from Wednesday's Fierce Fest - photos to come!

Hope it's a good one!

See and Be Scene - October 14th

Two events worth checking out tomorrow (October 14th), and both of these events happen to be helping out worthy causes:

The first one is "Fierce Fest". Fierce fest is going to be taking place from 6 - 9 pm at Lustre Pearl. If you haven't been to Lustre Pearl - it's worth the trip. It's located on 97 Rainey street, right behind the IHOP on Cesar Chavez.
This event is benefiting The SafePlace Women's Shelter. SafePlace has been making Austin a safer and more compassionate place since 1974, and during Fierce Fest happy hour a portion of all drinks purchases at Lustre Pearl will benefit SafePlace.
But never fear - while we may be doing good, there is still fun to be had! Drinking (for a cause!), photobooth (by Trevor Ray Thompson!) and games (thumb wars, arm wrestling and staring contests!) will make sure that fun is to be had by all. Also - Lustre Pearl has free parking and is dog-friendly. So feel free to bring Fido out to join in the fun and games!
Sponsors include: Just Mind (counseling), Tito's Vodka, Makers Mark, Trevor Ray Photography and Blue Buddah Henna Tattoo's.

The second event, you ask?

Also letting us help out the less fortunate (while having a great time) is: Art From the Streets Preview Party. At Canvas Bar from 6 - 9 pm on October 14th, you can check out inspiring art from some of the local Austin homeless. Canvas Bar is located at 105 E. 5th St. While I'm not sure if the art can actually be purchased at this event, it gives you a chance to see what will be featured at the 2009 AFTS Show and Sale on November 14th & 15th. (More about that at a later time...). This is a particularly amazing event, and all proceeds from the sale go directly to the artist! Check out the AFTS website for more details. Bonus: DJ Grey will be providing music for the event! Even if you're planning on going to Fierce Fest (as I am) try to stop by Canvas Bar even if just for a few minutes to see some gallery worthy art.

So - sounds like an exciting Wednesday so far! While I'm sure there are a million other amazing events going on in this wonderful city - let us know if there are any worthy of being mentioned in A.P.E...

Here's to a wonderful Tuesday night, and an fun tomorrow!

Monday, October 12, 2009

Hi Y'all! Ready to have some fun?

It's time for a formal introduction, y'all:

-So what is this A.P.E. blog thing, anyway?
APE stands for Austin Parties and Events. Our goal is to highlight local parties and events that are going on, and let you know about them.

-Why me?
Well, I like to have fun. You like to have fun. Even your neighbor down the street likes to have fun. Yeah, that one. Face it - we all like to have fun. That is the premise of APE.

-So why did you start A.P.E?
Maybe you just moved to Austin and you're looking for the coolest bar/nightclub that hosts the coolest events - maybe you've lived in Austin your whole life and you're just looking to have fun and meet new people, but you just don't know where to go to do it. Maybe..you're just a visiting party animal wanting to experience the best Austin nightlife scene! We want to help!

-What kinds of Parties & Events do you go to?
Big parties, small parties, dance parties, drinking parties. Concerts, art exhibits, poetry readings, active events (such as biking, canoeing, etc.). The main requirement in any party/event that we post is a potential for FUN.
These may be huge events, small house parties or just a new band playing at a local coffee shop.
It seems like there are always free or low cost parties/events going on. Some even have free beer/food, goodie bags and sometimes even clothes. Sometimes (if we are lucky) all of the above!

-Soo...who are you?
Our names are Jeremiah & Ashley. As far as we are concerned, Austin in the best city in the United States! We like to party, and because of that, we love Austin. We just moved here 6 months ago and shortly upon our arrival, we decided we wanted to have the time of our life in this lively city. But when we first moved here, we kept finding about all of the epic parties & events too late. Therefore we decided to hook ourselves into the scene and share it with others.

-What's the catch?
No catch! The only thing we ask is that if some amazing event comes up that we don't have posted - let us know!! Also, if you happen to see as at some event that we have posted, say hi to us - we don't bite!

All this being said, we should let you know this: by no means is this a concise know-all guide to what is going on in Austin. There are great websites for that already (Do512, Austin360). Or just check out the local edition of the Chronicle. We try to hand pick events that seem to give the most fun for your dollar and sometimes we just like to promote some of our favorite dj's/musicians.

And now that you know about us, tell us something about you.
What kind of parties and/or events are you interested in hearing about?

Looking forward to joining you in this journey - let's have some FUN!

xoxo,

Jeremiah & Ashley
